Microsoft has yet to issue a similar patch for Office 2016, which has been causing issues for customers as well. The hang situation that occurs during an account sync operation in Microsoft Outlook for Mac 2011 is fixed.
The Office for Mac 2011 patch brings the version number up to 14.5.6. Thousands of people have gone to forums and Office support to complain that Outlook for Mac crashes after the El Capitan update of their Mac.
Office 2016 for Mac users are right to be unhappy with Apple and Microsoft as troubles continue with Office and the new ‘El Capitan’ release of Mac OSx. Oct 21 Update: Apple has now released the first OS X 10.11.1 update for El Capitan which claims to have fixed various problems including with Office 2016 and Mail. The new OS for Macs OS X 10.11 El Capitan has been released but don’t upgrade yet if you use Office 2016, Office 2011 or the following apps. Or set-up a visit (or chat) with Apple Support, at an Apple Store, via telephone, or online. If you are still experiencing Mail app keeps crashing with El Capitan or similar problems, consider re-installing the app into your Mac. This method usually fixes most of the sudden crash issues on your Mac. I haven't worked out yet what the problem is, it is not as simple as document size or the number of embedded images. Office 2011 seems mostly OK for me with El Capitan (I don't use Outlook so haven't been affected by those problems), but Word seems sluggish on some documents, with spinning beach ball or 'application unresponsive' messages. 
If you've either been waiting to update to OS X El Capitan because of issues with Microsoft Office for Mac 2011, or you've simply been suffering through them, good news-Microsoft has just pushed out a compatibility fix.
